The College of Dentistry is the largest oral health college in the State of Illinois, provides care for 35,000 patients a year, and has over 500 students seeking dental degrees including DMD, PhD and Master’s programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for chairside surgical dental assisting and transferring surgical instruments to residents/faculty.
  • Obtains digital X-rays and CBCT scans as requested.
  • Ensures that all surgical instruments are properly cleaned and sterilized. Ensure all rooms are OSHA compliant and adhere to University College of Dentistry guidelines. Maintains a working knowledge of instruments and equipment used at chair-side.
  • Monitors vital signs and maintains IV fluid flows during surgical procedures.
  • Evaluates and works with DA Ill on the needs of the clinic schedule; may also assist in becoming a peer mentor other dental assistants, and participates in clinic meetings.
  • Determines needs, stores, and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment used in the clinic. Responsible for reporting the maintenance and overall operating efficiency of equipment in the clinic, requests and monitors equipment repair to avert service interruption. Performs annual inventory audit.
  • Escorts patients from reception area to surgical suites. Prepares patients for treatment. Performs and obtain vitals on patients (including weight, blood pressure, pulse, and blood glucose).
  • Communicates directly with patients as guided by the residents and faculty; communicates in an appropriate and positive manner to guide and re‑assure patients, as well as support the patient care mission of the institution.
  • Performs scanning radiographs, referrals, and other medical documentation and updates the College's Electronic Health Record (Axium).
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications

Required:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Any one of the following categories:

  • A. Six (6 months) of work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant I level of this series.
  • B. Graduation from an accredited Dental Assisting School.
