Job Description
McKay Landscape Architects is seeking a passionate, self‑motivated Landscape Architect to join our design studio in Chicago, Illinois. The ideal candidate will be organized, dependable, punctual and a team player. They will share our passion for creating equitable access to nature through landscape design.
Our projects range from affordable and supportive housing, nonprofits, community gardens, educational facilities, and private residences. Depending on the applicant’s experience, the position could be entry to mid‑level and full or part time. A successful candidate will be creative, curious and passionate about the intersection of design and ecology.
Responsibilities include creating design documents such as presentation graphics, planting designs, construction documents, and specifications, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience using AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite to produce functional working drawings and presentation graphics. The candidate will work under the supervision of more experienced staff to develop technical knowledge and work efficiency and will contribute to site analysis before design and during project installation.
EssentialFunctions
- Assist in developing design concepts, studies, and design options.
- Perform basic analysis and design calculations under direct supervision.
- Use computer‑assisted design software to execute assignments.
- Help prepare presentations, renderings, and 3‑D models to effectively communicate design ideas to the project team, clients, and contractors.
- Provide support to staff members as needed.
- Review work product for quality control and quality assurance.
- Work collaboratively with team members to gain technical knowledge and work efficiency; flexibility and diligence are required.
- Take on assignments of increasing difficulty as proficiency grows.
B.S. in Landscape Architecture or a related accredited field.
Minimum 3+ years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Engage effectively with professionals in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Communicate effectively with co‑workers, clients, and contractors to build relationships and trust.
- Be familiar with principles of design, plant materials, hardscape elements, and sustainable design practices.
- Exercise good judgment.
- Convey information through effective verbal and written communication.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (minimum 3 years of experience).
- Proficient in general documentation software such as Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, PowerPoint, etc.
- Perform assignments of increased difficulty as proficiency grows.
- Willing to learn and develop public speaking and presentation skills.
