Job Summary

The Attending Physician will work within the Section of Palliative Medicine. Responsibilities will include 12-14 weeks per year as the Lead Attending for inpatient consultative services. This will include the participation in and oversight of inpatient consultative services to adults and children hospitalized at Stroger Hospital, grief counseling for families experiencing a hospital death, and advance care planning. Assists as a back-up or second inpatient consultative Attending throughout the year.

Will participate in outpatient palliative services co-located in various specialty clinics. Serves as consultative and/or primary care for patients with high symptom, complex, chronic illness. Participates in the teaching of fellows and medical students.

Typical Duties

Clinical

* Assesses and manages patients with terminal, advanced, and/or serious illness.

* Participates in the care of inpatient and ambulatory patients seen by the palliative care medicine service. Works in the capacity of a consultant or as a primary physician.

* The Attending will work with a team of providers to include other physicians, APNs, social workers and a chaplain.

Teaching and Training

* Teaches and supervises medical students, residents, and fellows in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Quality Improvement

* Participates in quality improvement efforts designed to improve the quality of care of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

* Minimum Qualifications

* Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university

* Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or eligibility to obtain license prior to starting employment

* Illinois and Federal controlled substance license or eligibility to obtain license prior to starting employment

* Board certification in Hospice & Palliative Medicine or eligibility for Board certification prior to starting employment (Must complete certification within three (3) years from the completion of the palliative care residency of fellowship)

* Completion of residency training and Board certification in one of the following:
Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, or Psychiatry

* Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship or residency in Hospice & Palliative Medicine prior to starting employment OR an equivalent practice pathway for training if training was completed prior to 2010

* Completion of residency training and Board certification in one of the following:
Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, or Psychiatry

Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship or residency in Hospice & Palliative Medicine prior to starting employment OR an equivalent practice pathway for training if training was completed prior to 2010
