The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery, Section of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, seeks full-time faculty members at any rank. The appointees will contribute to patient care, medical education, and scholarship. Other duties will include teaching and supervision of trainees and students in both surgical critical care and trauma fellowships, and scholarly activity. Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications.

These positions are benefits-eligible. The University of Chicago offers a wide range of benefits programs and resources for eligible employees, including health, retirement, and paid time off. Information about the benefit offerings can be found in the Benefits Guidebook. They will join a vibrant, diverse, and distinguished community of faculty colleagues and learners in UChicago Medicine, the Biological Science Division, the Pritzker School of Medicine, and the University of Chicago and its affiliates.

A tradition of excellence in patient care, basic, clinical, and translational sciences, combined with the strengths of one of the world's top academic institutions, provides the foundation for a career as an academic physician. UChicago Medicine has been at the forefront of medical care since 1927. Located in historic Hyde Park, the primary medical campus includes the Center for Care and Discovery, Comer Children's Hospital, Bernard

A. Mitchell Hospital for adult inpatient care, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) totaling more than 550 beds in service and net patient care revenues over $1.4 billion. Plans are underway for an additional 150-bed patient tower. New ambulatory facilities are located in Orland Park and the South Loop, and the Ingalls Health System has recently integrated into the network.

The University of Chicago has established level 1 adult trauma services on its Hyde Park medical campus, supplementing the existing level 1 pediatric trauma services and the burn and complex wound center. The University of Chicago is now up for level 1 verification status for both the adult and pediatric trauma services within the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in 2027.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must:

  • 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent,
  • 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois,
  • 3) be Board certified or eligible in surgical critical care and general surgery (or equivalent), and
  • 4) have completed an accredited fellowship or equivalent training in trauma/critical care.

We especially welcome applicants with trauma and acute care surgery experience and an interest in leadership in trauma and surgical critical care. We invite applicants committed to working in academic medicine with interests in research related to injury response, trauma care, trauma prevention, healthcare disparities, innovative approaches to urban healthcare delivery and/or other broad areas related to the mission of an academic level 1 trauma center.
