PEER TUTOR PART TIME - ADULT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE
Olive-Harvey College is currently seeking a part-time Peer Tutor for the Adult Education Department. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in coursework, improving study skills and becoming independent learners.
Essential Duties- Provide students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
- Provide one-on-one support and encouragement to help students develop increased self-confidence and become independent learners.
- Engage tutees in active learning and provide academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
- Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, helping students learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
- Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
- Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills to prepare for academic success.
- Provide clerical support and perform general office duties including data entry, scheduling appointments, answering phones, filing, and photocopying.
- Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.
- Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- Applicants must be enrolled in an ESL Transition level course, or working towards a high school diploma with a minimum of NRS Level 4 High Intermediate.
- Applicants should maintain a pattern of good class attendance.
- Applicants must provide a recommendation from an instructor or administration.
- Applicants should have demonstrated academic progress by making a level gain.
- Applicants must be in good standing and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
- Applicants must not be current full or part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- All positions are employment at-will.
- Strong background in math, science, social studies, language arts, ESL, or other assigned subject area being tutored.
- Must be able to work flexible hours as needed.
- Previous experience in tutoring and/or office work preferred, but not required.
- Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
- Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem solve in the context of a specific discipline/subject area.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way.
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to manage tasks, manage time and maintain schedules.
- Ability to guide tutoring sessions.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Salary: $17.00/hour
