Job Summary

The Cross Categorical II Special Education Teacher provides individualized academic and behavioral instruction to students with moderate to severe disabilities in a structured classroom setting. The teacher designs and implements instruction aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and collaborates with families, general education teachers, and related service providers to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and functional growth. This position requires an educator who demonstrates empathy, patience, and adaptability while maintaining high expectations for all students and promoting inclusion and independence.

Education,

Certification, and Licensure
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations (IDEA, Section 504, and IEP compliance)
  • Understanding of evidence-based instructional practices, behavioral interventions, and assistive technology
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) and Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBS I) endorsement
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful teaching experience in a special education classroom preferred
  • Experience with students with significant learning, emotional, and developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge of functional academics, life skills instruction, and behavior management techniques
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including paraprofessionals, therapists, and general education staff
  • Familiarity with data-driven decision-making and progress monitoring
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement IEPs that meet the academic, behavioral, and functional needs of students
  • Provide direct, small-group, and individualized instruction aligned with district curriculum and IEP goals
  • Adapt general education curriculum and materials to meet the learning needs of students
  • Use evidence-based strategies to promote student engagement and skill development
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure appropriate inclusion and accommodations
  • Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Implement behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) and maintain a positive and structured classroom environment
  • Supervise and direct paraprofessionals and aides assigned to the classroom
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and concerns
  • Work with related service providers (e.g., speech, occupational, and physical therapists) to coordinate services
  • Prepare required reports, progress notes, and documentation to ensure compliance with district and ISBE regulations
  • Participate in IEP meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), and professional development sessions
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and professional standards of practice
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Services
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS)
  • Ability to design and deliver lessons that foster student independence and self-regulation
  • Proficiency in using technology to support instruction, communication, and data collection (e.g., IEP software, adaptive tech)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with staff, students, and families
  • Patience, empathy, and emotional resilience when working with students who have challenging behaviors
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
