Assistant Professor of Theology – Loyola University Chicago – Department of Theology – Full‑time, Exempt – Rogers Park‑Lake Shore Campus.

Responsibilities

Teach two credit‑bearing courses per semester in religion and Islam (approximately 5 hours per week in class). Prepare course syllabuses, order texts, lectures, student exercises, and examinations. Maintain office hours (at least 3 per week) for student advising, proctor student examinations, serve on at least two departmental committees, attend all departmental meetings, conduct and publish research and scholarship in religious studies and Islamic theology.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $51,000 – $88,000 (nine‑month academic appointment). Additional salary may be offered based on qualifications.

Qualifications
  • PhD in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, or a related field; or ABD (all but dissertation) with the following experience:
  • Designed undergraduate‑level courses in Islamic studies using primary and secondary sources.
  • Native or near‑native fluency in at least two languages of the Islamic intellectual tradition (e.g., Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman Turkish).
  • Conducted research using Arabic‑language primary texts in Islamic theology, law, and mysticism.
  • Conducted research using manuscript materials from libraries and archives in at least two languages of the Islamic intellectual tradition.
  • Prepared peer‑reviewed articles, book chapters, or monographs based on original analysis of primary‑language and manuscript materials.
  • Conducted comparative research using primary‑language sources from Islamic and Judeo‑Arabic intellectual traditions to interpret texts and analyze manuscript materials.
