PEER TUTOR PART TIME – JAPANESE LANGUAGE

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 68,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.
Harold Washington is in the process of seeking a Japanese Tutor to enhance our language program. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, offering individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in coursework, improving study skills, and becoming independent learners. The ideal candidate should have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of the Japanese language.
DutiesAnd Responsibilities
- Provide students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
- Provide one-on-one support and encouragement to help students develop increased self confidence and become independent learners.
- Engage tutees in active learning and provide academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
- Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, helping students learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
- Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
- Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.
- Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre‑credit or credit classes.
- Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
- Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students).
- Applicants must be in “good standing” and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
- Applicants must not be a current full or part‑time employee of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- All positions are “employment at‑will.”
- Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
- Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem solve in the context of a specific discipline/subject area.
- Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Reasoning and problem solving skills.
- Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way.
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to manage tasks, manage time and maintain schedules.
- Ability to guide tutoring sessions.
- Successful completion of CCC Japanese 103 with a grade of B or higher.
- Alternatively, holding a certification of JLPT N5, or possessing a level of proficiency in the Japanese language equivalent to this standard. We are open to evaluating proficiency through an interview with the instructor.
- High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago.
- 3.0 overall GPA and 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
- Strong background in math, science, literature, or other assigned academic subject matter.
- Ability to work in a one‑on‑one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts.
- Prior experience in tutoring duties preferred, but not required.
- Student worker rate is $17.00/hr if variance from $17.00/hr is required, College HR/Recruitment must discuss with District Compensation.
- The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
$17.00 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as other factors such as internal equity.
