The Highlights
- Assist with advising current and prospective political science majors and minors in-person and online.
- Create advising support materials in multiple formats.
- Develop advising protocols for faculty and conduct faculty training.
- Maintain knowledge of liberal arts curriculum, policies, and graduate programs.
- Coordinate liaison among faculty and academic advising support.
- Advise political science majors and minors on course choices, major selection, progression toward graduation, graduate and professional school options, career opportunities, and tuition/financial implications. Refer students to other university offices as needed.
- Lead and coordinate holistic academic‑advising initiatives in the department, assign faculty advisors based on interests, create and maintain support materials and newsletters, train faculty on advising practices, support mentoring efforts, recommend course placement, substitution, and waiver decisions to the chair and Dean’s Office, help coordinate departmental events, and represent the department at admission and Career Center events.
- Attend regular meetings with the LAS Undergraduate College Office and the department, provide feedback to college advising processes, assist the Associate Director with accurate accounting of program changes, support degree conferral, newly declared student record analysis, transfer credit approvals, and ensure appropriate college credit application via the Degree Progress Report.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
- Bachelor’s degree (required); master’s degree in a related discipline, higher education, student affairs, or counseling preferred.
- Familiarity with liberal education required.
- Three years full‑time experience in academic advising or equivalent.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with faculty, staff, and students.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies with good judgment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office, People Soft, and social media platforms.
- Competitive salary: $47,783 to $54,537 per year.
