Job Summary
The role of the Tutor/Counselor (TC) is to facilitate the academic, social, and cultural enrichment of high school students participating in the Summer Instructional Component of our Upward Bound/TRIO Program. Acting as a high energy individual, the Tutor Counselors serve as mentors, role models, and advisors with a primary focus involving supervising participants during the academic segments; cultural enrichment trips; and at times, residential components.
This position is limited to a 7-week contract and as such, the schedule may vary. A typical schedule includes Monday through Friday from 8:30am 5:00pm. Some weekends, overnights, and travel will be required. Contingent upon space and funding, a typical TC may be expected to:
* Reside in the Residence Halls supervising high school students for up to two weeks (On call 24 hours a day). This is typical when the program operates with a two-week residential component. On-campus housing and meals included.
* Assume all meals and engage with the students and other residential staff during all waking hours.
Job Description
* Must attend Summer Instructional Component classes with Upward Bound high school students regularly and assist teachers as needed.
* Tutor students individually and in group settings in a variety of core academic subjects of English, Math, Science and Foreign Languages.
* Responsible for writing comprehensive, bi-weekly student progress reports.
* Must be able to mentor students in the development and implementation of a broad range of academic skill areas, particularly reading, writing, study, and library usage skills.
* Establish and maintain positive, respectful, mentoring relationships with all students.
* Participate in weekly meetings with other Tutor Counselors and project staff to implement activities, address particular group concerns, and promote communication.
* Clarify, monitor adherence to, and enforce policies and procedures with particular attention to rules governing student conduct.
* Responsible for the coordination of selected program activities and field trips.
* Act as a chaperone during weekly field trips and the week-long end of summer enrichment trip.
* When applicable, responsible for living on campus in the residence halls with high school students and supervising an assigned group.
* Monitor day and evening academic, co-curricular, and free- time activities under the supervision of the Residence Hall Manager.
* Performs some lay-counseling functions.
* Act as a chaperone during weekly field trips and the week-long end of summer enrichment trip.
* Maintain confidentiality, as appropriate while working with minors.
* Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* Continuing enrollment in college and successful completion of a minimum of two full years of undergraduate study, attending as a half-time or full-time student.
PLEASE NOTE:
Eligible candidates may not be enrolled in courses during the six week Upward Bound summer program session.
* A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale) is required.
* A demonstrated competence (minimum 3.0 GPA) in content areas (Math, English, Science, & Foreign Language). Successful completion of at least one college level course in each area in which s/he tutors.
* Proficient in the basic skill areas, e.g. written and verbal communication, reading, study skills, and library usage.
* Candidate must possess excellent supervisory, communication, tutorial and leadership skills.
* Candidate must be compliance - driven; able to adhere to a strict schedule and to follow all rules & regulations.
* Must be energetic, creative, flexible, enthusiastic, and enjoys working with teens individually and in groups.
* Qualified candidates will be fully committed to the students and the six-week program schedule.
* Committed to working with students and individuals from diverse academic and socio-economic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
* Previous work experience with high school student population and residential living are preferred.
* Proven experience with time-management, conflict-management and organizational skills are also preferred.
