Teacher Assistant – Position Overview

Under the general direction of the school principal and under the immediate supervision of a teacher holding a valid state certificate, assists in the instruction of pupils; and performs related duties as required.

• Assist in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities.
• Provide security functions within the school such as monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards.
• Assist students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.
• Assist teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying student work.
• Operate photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
• Assist in maintaining the orderly arrangement of classrooms.
• Greet and direct visitors to appropriate areas of the school.
• Consult with teachers regarding individual student concerns.
• Operate audio‑visual equipment (video cassette recorders, movie projectors, film strip projectors, tape recorders, phonographs).
• Provide tutoring services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
• Assist in collection and grading of students’ homework assignments and examination materials.
• Assist in supervising the loading and unloading of students on school buses.
• Assist in receiving, processing, and issuing new books under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
• Collect daily classroom absentee reports and contact parents and guardians about absences.
• May assist elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary.
• May assist in the supervision of the school procedure to sell public transportation passes to students.

• Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education, obtained after completing at least 60 semester hours of college credit at an accredited institution or passing the paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).
• Good knowledge of proper English grammar, spelling, and basic mathematics.
• Knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
• Ability to work with school-aged children, follow written and oral instructions, operate basic office equipment, and communicate effectively with the public.
• Good oral and written communication skills and reading skills.
• Desirable skill in operating audio‑visual equipment and personal computers.
• Light work physical requirement: exerting up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, or up to ten pounds frequently; walking or standing for a significant period; sitting most of the time with occasional pushing or pulling of arm controls.
