Special Education Classroom Assistant

Salary Range: $41,766.58 to $60,584.36

Essential Functions:

Assists Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools in reinforcing efforts with children with various disabilities, including physical disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, emotional impairments, and mental impairments in accordance with each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP). Lifts and positions non-ambulatory students during the school day as instructed; provides one‑on‑one tutoring, personal hygiene services, assists with orthopedic equipment, teaches daily living skills, accompanies students to health facilities, assists in feeding, takes notes, corrects homework, maintains behavior records, accompanies field trips, attends workshops, and provides related duties.

Marginal Functions:
May physically restrain violent students using aggressive management techniques, administer CPR as directed, operate audio‑visual equipment, operate photocopying equipment.

Certification Requirements:
Valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education. Must have at least 60 semester hours of college credit or have passed a paraprofessional exam.

Knowledge, Abilities, and

Skills:

Good knowledge of characteristics of students with various disabilities, English grammar and spelling, basic mathematics. Ability to work with students ages birth to 21, follow instructions, complete basic written reports. CPR training desirable; mandatory if not completed at hire.

Good oral and written communication skills; skill in using photocopying and audio‑visual equipment desirable.

Physical Requirements:

Medium work; may exert up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20 lbs frequently, 10 lbs constantly to move objects. Must reach, handle, talk, hear, use near and far vision.
