Position: CAMPUS MINISTER FOR CATHOLIC LITURGICAL MUSIC

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sacramental Life In partnership with the Assistant Director of Campus Ministry and the Rector of Madonna della Strada Chapel, cultivate a joyful, inclusive, and prayerful worship life at Loyola University Chicago. Recruit, train, and develop student leadership in liturgical music including choirs, instrumentalists, and cantors. Provide musical leadership for the weekly liturgical life of the university such as Sunday Mass and Taizé Prayer.

    Provide musical leadership for all special and unique liturgies and celebrations. Coordinate all music planning for weddings (additional stipend provided for playing at wedding liturgies). A team-player with the wider sacramental life staff in the day-to-day operation of the chapel and in pastoral presence to students.
  • Administrative Duties Attend and participate in Division of Mission Integration, Campus Ministry, and Sacramental Life events and meetings. Produce worship resources and aids for Sunday and other liturgies. Oversee the maintenance of musical instruments and equipment. Organize, recruit, plan, and participate in the monthly Sunday organ concert series. Manage the music budget in collaboration with the assistant director for sacramental life.
  • University Collaboration Participate in programming and events related to the larger Campus Ministry team, including retreats, immersions, pilgrimages, and other opportunities. Together with the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, plan, coordinate, and execute the university’s annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in early December. Together with the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, serve as an adjunct faculty member teaching applied organ (additional stipend provided).

    Explore, create, and maintain relationships on campus, in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the wider Chicago musical community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

M.Div. or other pastoral ministry degree supplemented with three years of pastoral ministry experience, preferably in a university setting.

Qualifications Summary

The Campus Minister for Catholic Liturgical Music provides liturgical music and pastoral leadership to the university community. This work is done in partnership with the Sacramental Life team of which they are a member. This person is also an adept collaborator across departments at the university, especially in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts as an adjunct faculty member and frequent campus partner.

As a member of the wider team of campus ministers, this person also serves our student population attending to their spiritual well‑being in line with the Ignatian principle of Care for the Whole Person (Cura Personalis).

Education and Work Experience

Master-level education in music, divinity, theology, pastoral ministry or related field, and three to five years of professional ministerial experience in a Roman Catholic setting. A person with exceptional pipe organ, piano, and conducting skills and well‑versed in a variety of musical styles. A practicing Christian of deep faith with the ability to articulate Loyola University Chicago’s Jesuit, Catholic identity in an engaging and intelligent manner.

Experience creating inclusive environments for a diverse student body.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

Accomplished organist, pianist, and choral conductor.

Computer Skills

Music engraving software proficient (Finale or Sibelius), MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
