Elementary Special Education Classroom Assistant

Reports to:

Director of Diverse Learning/Special Education Case Manager Position Description

Under the supervision of the General Education and Special Education teachers, the Elementary Special Education Classroom Assistant provides support to students with exceptional needs, facilitating their ability to meet academic, behavioral, and functional expectations, including implementing Individual Education Plans (IEP) or 504 Plans.

Position Expectations
  • Assist a specific student with behavioral and functional needs in academic and transitional settings.
  • Support teachers in various instructional settings, including recess, gym, lunch, library, and field trips.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment, and instructional activities set by teachers.
  • Administer diagnostic assessments with appropriate modifications as per the IEP.
  • Operate and care for classroom equipment as needed.
  • Support a well-organized learning environment that maximizes student engagement.
  • Serve as a resource to the clinical and IEP teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by teachers or case managers.

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance student learning.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards in all interactions.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents regarding academics, discipline, and functional skills.

  • Qualifications
  • IL Paraprofessional Certification.
  • Alignment with the school's educational philosophy.
  • College coursework in education; special education coursework or a bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with students with exceptional needs.
  • Ability to organize and maintain student files according to regulations.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency (Outlook, Word, Excel, internet research).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Note:

    Residency within Chicago is not required.
