Job Summary

Under the general direction of the school principal, and under the immediate supervision of a teacher holding a valid state certificate, the School Services Assistant assists in the instruction of pupils and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities.
  • Provides security functions within the school such as monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards.
  • Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments.
  • Assists teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying students’ work in classrooms.
  • Operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials; operates audiovisual equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining the orderly arrangement of the classroom.
  • Greets and directs visitors to appropriate areas of the school, consulting with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
  • Provides tutoring services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Assists in collecting and grading students’ homework assignments and examination materials under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Assists in supervising the loading and unloading of students on school buses.
  • Assists in the receipt, processing, and issuance of new books under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Collects daily classroom absentee reports and contacts parents and guardians to verify causes of student absences; may assist elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary.
  • May assist in the supervision of the school procedure to sell public transportation passes to students.
  • Communicates with families of quarantined students, focusing on ensuring they know what to expect and how to access instruction.
  • Assists students and families with securing devices if needed, accessing necessary online programs, and troubleshooting technology issues in coordination with appropriate school and district resources.
  • Coordinates logistical details of remote instruction for quarantined students, including educator schedules, Google Meets setup, and other needs.
  • Provides supervision of in‑person student learning while a teacher is teaching remotely when absent for COVID‑related reasons.
  • Coordinates student COVID testing logistics at school, including scheduling test administration, supervising students waiting for tests, providing class coverage during staff testing, and promoting testing consents to families.
  • Promotes student and family vaccination opportunities at school, assisting with parent reminders/notifications, onsite mobile vaccination events, and reminding families of second dose appointments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D. equivalent) supplemented by six months of experience in an educational setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Good knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, basic knowledge of mathematics, knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work with and for school‑aged children, ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, reading skills, skill in operating audio‑visual equipment and personal computers is highly desirable.
Conditions of Employment
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency – Employees must live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of hire and maintain residency throughout employment.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated – Employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of their hire date.
