The Department of Medicine, Section of Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago seeks part-time lecturers to develop and teach courses in the Master of Science in Threat and Response Management program. These positions are renewable for up to three year terms. Compensation is dependent on qualifications. These positions are benefits ineligible. Combining rigorous academic inquiry with emergency management practice, the program is designed to help students prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises and disaster.

The face of emergency management is changing rapidly. Alongside traditional threats and disasters, governments, businesses, and communities are facing emerging challenges due to environmental threats, infrastructure protection and cybersecurity risk. The program operates in an executive, monthly, hybrid format and includes nine hours of instruction one three-day weekend each month on Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Classes are scheduled during morning, afternoon, and evening hours.

Courses meet for three consecutive months during each 9 or 10-week quarter for a total of 27 instructional hours. In general, the first weekend of classes each quarter will be held in person at our Hyde Park campus, and the last two weekends of each quarter will be remote via Zoom. Appointees will teach the following courses:
Introduction to Homeland Security and Emergency Management, TRM Introductions:
An Evolving Threat Landscape, Intelligence Driven Decision Making, Bureaucracy, Politics & Ethics in a Digital Age, Threat and Response Planning & Communication, Threat and Response Leadership Case Studies, VUCA Risks:
Infectious Disease. Appointees are required to develop course syllabi, in-class and asynchronous content, assignments, and provide timely assignment feedback and submission of course grades. They are also required to manage the Canvas course site, attend all monthly in-person and remote synchronous sessions, host office hours, attend quarterly instructor meetings, participate in capstone project process, and other co-curricular programming and recruiting events.

Prior to starting employment, qualified applicants must have
1) a graduate-level degree in a relevant field (PhD and/or MD preferred) and
2) have relevant experience in emergency management, homeland or national security, cybersecurity, environmental security, social sciences, public policy, public health, legal and ethical issues, or related field. Candidates with prior teaching experience and/or relevant practical experience are strongly preferred. To be considered, those interested must apply through The University of Chicago's Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications.
