The People’s Music School is Chicago’s oldest and largest completely free nonprofit music school, providing transformational music instruction to over 800 K-12 students in Chicago. The school has a straightforward mission: to provide access to the transformational benefits of high‑quality music instruction to youth who otherwise would not be able to afford it. We focus our work in communities that have been systematically excluded and marginalized from receiving a high quality music education.
Through intensive instruction and performance, The People’s Music School’s students grow not only musically, but also socially, emotionally, and academically, developing a foundation of responsibility, self‑esteem, resilience, and purpose. From putting an instrument in an aspiring young musician’s hand for the first time, to teaching students how to read and write music and perform in an ensemble, The People’s Music School provides opportunity and instruction at sites located in four Chicago communities:
Uptown, Albany Park, Back of the Yards, and the Greater South Side. Students receive an average of four hours of instruction per week, at absolutely no cost, delivered by world‑class teaching artists.
The Instrument Inventory Coordinator is directly involved with the day-to-day operations of a high-energy music program, responsible for maintaining our expansive inventory of instruments and accessories.
Responsibilities- Maintain instrument inventory of over 1000 string, woodwind, brass, percussion instruments and their accessories
- Support instrument assessment and intake process
- Support movement of instruments across sites
- In collaboration with Senior Manager and the Program Team, coordinate all instrument repairs with our external vendors
- Inform Senior Manager of all instrument-related issues
- Collaborate with Program staff to ensure they have the instruments necessary for all students and programs at their program site
- Collaborate with Program staff to maintain an accurate account of what instruments students are assigned (including in school and at home)
- Assist with ordering instruments
- Conduct basic instrument repairs
- Maintain instrument storage facilities at all of our Program Sites
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned
- Experience playing musical instruments is required
- Prior experience assessing quality of musical instruments is preferred
- Prior experience repairing musical instruments is preferred
- Highly organized and self‑motivated
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively

- Part-Time, In-Person position at 10 hours per week
- Flexible schedule
- At least 1 day a week M-TH available to travel to and work at program sites during program hours (between 3:30‑7:30pm)
- Local travel required
- Must have vehicle for instrument transport between sites
- Occasionally required to push, pull, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- $20 per hour
