Requirements

Master's degree in school counseling and current ISBE Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Counseling Endorsement.

Primary Function

As vital members of the school’s educational leadership team, professional school counselors provide comprehensive developmental supports within the academic, personal/social, and career domains to ensure that today's students become productive, well‑adjusted adults of tomorrow. School counselors are uniquely trained professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. They provide proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help all students achieve success in school.

Job Responsibilities Create, Implement, and Evaluate a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

Develop and implement a counseling program aligned with the Chicago Public Schools REACH Framework, which is aligned to the American School Counselor Association National Model for School Counseling Programs. Deliver services equitably to all students in the building.

Conduct Annual Needs Assessments and Data Reviews

Perform annual needs assessments and data reviews to identify critical areas of student need, then create targeted program goals aligned to the school wide mission, ensuring services address demonstrated needs and improve academic achievement.

Implement the School Counseling Core Curriculum

Design, conduct, and co‑teach learning activities in classroom, large group, and/or school‑wide settings based on academic, career, postsecondary, and social/emotional needs. Activities include classroom guidance, high school/college/career fairs and tours, and grade‑level or school‑wide team‑building activities.

Provide Individual Student Planning Activities

Collaborate with students, staff, and families to create academic plans leading to diploma and postsecondary options. Facilitate completion of Individual Learning Plans in Naviance, transition activities such as orientations and high‑school application processes, and conferences to inform families of test results and educational planning. Ensure students stay on track to the next grade level or life phase.

Provide Responsive Individual Services

Offer small groups, structured short‑term goal‑oriented counseling sessions, participation in student assistance teams, and conferences with teachers, families, and external partners. Provide crisis or emergency support and participate in IEP/504 plan teams.

Note:

school counselors do not provide therapeutic treatment for mental, emotional, or bodily disorders.

Provide Indirect Student Support

Offer referral to district and community resources, share strategies to support student achievement with parents, teachers, and community partners, serve as student advocate, promote development across domains, serve as school resident expert on student development, and partner with committees and advisory boards.

Provide System Support

Coordinate, conduct, and participate in activities that support effective school operations. This includes creating an annual evidence‑based implementation plan, holding needs assessments, collecting data to monitor interventions, protecting planning time, and coordinating professional development for faculty and staff.

Participate in Regular Professional Development

Actively engage in district, state, and national professional development, join professional associations, read journals, attend workshops and conferences, and undertake continuing education coursework to stay current with evidence‑based practices.
