LIBRARY ASSOCIATE – HOURLY (MULTIPLE VACANCIES SYSTEMWIDE)
Department:
Library Operations & Patron Experiences (Chicago Public Library). Position is open to multiple vacancies. Additional vacancies may be possible pending budget approval.
- Assist library patrons in using facility resources (catalog, indexes, reference materials).
- Develop and administer library programs and services such as adult book discussion, library orientation, bibliographic instruction, and children’s programs.
- Perform collection maintenance activities, including shelving and purging of library materials.
- Assist in ordering and cataloging books and materials.
- Arrange library displays and exhibits to publicize facility services.
- Conduct research on bibliographic data using library databases and the Internet.
- Provide library orientation and bibliographic instruction using printed materials and electronic resources.
- Prepare documentation and information about library activities (records, reports, promotional flyers, bulletin boards).
- Assist at the circulation desk as needed, including charging for materials, maintaining inventory of supplies, and processing interlibrary loans, reserves, and holds.
- Promote library programs and services by visiting area schools and community organizations.
Location: Various Districts 1-5.
Days Off: Two days off per week.
Shift: Some evenings and weekends.
Hours: 80 hours per month scheduled within normal unit hours.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Applicants must complete an interview. Selected candidates will be hired in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Experience working or volunteering in a library.
- Bookstore/retail/customer service experience.
- Previous experience in education, social work, or related fields.
- Ability to work with diverse patronage, including children, teens, and adults.
- Coursework toward an MLIS or MSLIS.
