Overview

Betty Shabazz International Charter School (BSICS) is looking to hire dynamic math teachers with an Illinois Professional Educator License endorsed in Middle Grades (K-5) Mathematics or who have completed college and passed the Illinois ILTS Middle Grades (5-8) Math Test. BSICS is a network of two K-8 Chicago elementary campuses:
Betty Shabazz Academy (7823 S. Ellis Ave, Chatham) and Barbara

A. Sizemore Academy (6547 S. Stewart Ave, Englewood). The school model integrates history, culture, STEM, community service and character development into a rigorous curriculum and school routines to prepare students to overcome challenges and become transformational, next generation, global leaders.

Instructors hired to teach math at BSICS are expected to:

Responsibilities
  • Embrace the Making Thinking Visible and Tru Math Frameworks.
  • Demonstrate content knowledge required to use the rigorous Illustrative Math curriculum with fidelity, including manipulatives and workbooks, and transfer understanding to students.
  • Utilize a variety of individualized and small-group strategies to move students at different levels toward grade-level attainment.
  • Evidence classroom management practices that foster respect and affirm and inspire students to become self-confident, independent, successful learners.
  • Analyze student classroom data to focus and drive whole-class and individualized instruction.
  • Possess the patience and skills to effectively interact with students in need of social-emotional supports.
  • The math staff at Betty Shabazz is a Village of dynamic and experienced teachers committed to collaboratively addressing daily teaching and student-learning challenges. Hired teachers will continuously grow through regular participation with other teachers and staff in professional development, department meetings, observations of teaching videos and coaching sessions. All math teachers hired are provided with supports to pursue personal professional goals in mathematics.
