Special Education Teacher

Under the direction of the Principal, the teacher will guide students in gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve at or above grade level in accordance with the student's IEP. Teachers will plan lessons, provide instruction, manage the classroom in a manner that is conducive to learning, as well as demonstrate fairness and respect with students. The teacher will work with parents/guardians, as well as district support personnel to provide appropriate support to students.

The teacher will perform professional responsibilities in a manner that is in compliance with Board policy, as well as adhering to state and federal laws regarding public education.

Desired qualifications include a Bachelor's or Master's Degree, Illinois Professional Educator License with LBSI or LBSII endorsements, experience with children of the age to be taught, and technology skills necessary to deliver instruction.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of Illinois Learning Standards, academic evaluation and data collection methods, school improvement best practices, federal and state laws regarding special education, and the ability to deliver instruction in a manner that improves student achievement, implement intense student support, collect and manage data related to student progress, monitor and support student safety, communicate effectively orally and in writing, work in a team environment with teachers and other stakeholders.

Duties and responsibilities include providing written lesson plans, establishing high expectations for learning, providing specialized instruction, collecting data on student growth, assisting in developing and implementing Individual Educational Plans (IEP), coordinating with administrators and other teaching staff members, serving as a liaison between home and school, monitoring and evaluating student progress, applying effective practices in the delivery of curriculum and instruction, using differentiated instruction, complying with all district/school policies, practices and procedures, attending training/professional development, using available technology to enhance instruction and achievement, demonstrating competency in all subject areas taught, providing evidence of student performance and progress, establishing and maintaining rules and conduct and discipline, adhering to policies and procedures regarding Special Education referrals, staffing, and conferences, practicing fairness in teacher-pupil relationships, exhibiting an understanding and respect for students as individuals, being punctual and regular in attendance to school and duty assignments, exhibiting a cooperative attitude and professionalism toward students, parents, community, and school personnel, making appropriate use of professional preparation periods, presenting an appearance that does not adversely affect the student's ability to learn, communicating the academic progress, attendance, and conduct of students to their parents/guardians, and performing other duties as necessary to the position.

Working conditions include an inside/outside office environment. Hazards/unusual demands include frequent standing, sitting, walking, and lifting, as well as physical requirements of job functions such as bending/stoop, squatting/crouche, climbing, crawling, overhead reach, shoulder reach, kneeling, twisting, lifting, and repetitive movement of feet and hands.
