Adult ESL Instructor
Contracted Work Time: 4-8 hours weekly (5:00 – 7:00 pm); 30 weeks per academic year.
Compensation: $50/hour inclusive of planning time
Reports to:
Director of Assessment and English Learner Programming
Position Overview:
The Adult ESL Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality English language instruction to adult learners from diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. The instructor creates a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment while helping students develop practical English skills for everyday life, employment, education, and community participation.
- Bachelor's degree in TESOL, ESL, Education, Linguistics, English, or a related field.
- Experience teaching English as a second language to adults.
- Strong knowledge of English grammar, language development, and effective ESL teaching practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive and respectful learning environment.
- TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, or other relevant ESL teaching certification.
- Experience teaching learners at multiple proficiency levels.
- Experience with adult education, workforce development, or community-based education programs.
- Familiarity with English language proficiency standards and adult ESL assessment tools.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus.
- Plan and deliver engaging ESL lessons tailored to adult learners with varying levels of English proficiency.
- Teach speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation skills.
- Develop and adapt instructional materials, activities, and assessments to meet student needs and learning objectives.
- Assess students' English language skills and monitor their progress throughout the course.
- Provide constructive, individualized feedback and additional support as needed.
- Incorporate real-world situations and practical language skills into classroom instruction.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies and technology to support different learning styles and abilities.
- Create a welcoming, respectful, and culturally responsive classroom environment.
- Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and student progress records.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and program administrators regarding student needs and progress.
- Support students in developing the language skills and confidence needed to achieve their personal, educational, and employment goals.
- Follow program policies, procedures, curriculum standards, and applicable adult education requirements
