Position: Writing Teacher - 2026/2027 School Year (Woodlawn Middle School)

Teaching Position at The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School

The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. It has a three-part mission: to assist students in developing the habits of mind, work, and heart to be successful in college and good citizens of their community; to contribute to the community through student research, service, and leadership; and to improve teaching and learning by serving as a site of professional development for teachers and school leaders.

Woodlawn Middle School educates students in grades 6 - 8.

Full-time, salaried teaching position responsible for preparing students, regardless of tested ability, for success in college. Responsibilities include providing instruction and authentic writing experiences in the three primary Grade 6 writing genres, analyzing and using formative assessment data to improve instruction, designing curriculum and assessments using the learning standards of the University of Chicago Charter School, participating in and leading professional development activities;

and enabling students to contribute to the community through the creation of new knowledge.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, rigorous English Language Arts and writing instruction aligned to Grade 6 Common Core State Standards.
  • Provide explicit instruction in the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
  • Develop students' ability to write for a variety of purposes, audiences, and tasks.
  • Use mentor texts, exemplars, modeling, guided practice, and independent practice to strengthen student writing.
  • Integrate reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking across instruction.
  • Create meaningful opportunities for students to write regularly across content and genres.
  • Maintain high academic expectations while providing appropriate scaffolds and supports.
  • Develop and administer standards-aligned assessments and writing tasks.
  • Use formative and summative assessment data to identify student needs and adjust instruction.
  • Provide students with timely, specific, and actionable feedback.
  • Use writing rubrics and student work to monitor progress toward grade-level standards.
  • Provide opportunities for students to revise, reassess, and demonstrate growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and progress.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the academic and learning needs of all students.
  • Implement accommodations and supports outlined in students' IEPs and 504 Plans.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers, paraprofessionals, multilingual learner staff, related service providers, and other members of the student support team.
  • Provide targeted small-group instruction, intervention, enrichment, and appropriate scaffolding.
  • Use strategies such as graphic organizers, exemplars, sentence frames, checklists, conferencing, and assistive technology to promote student independence.
  • Establish a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous classroom environment.
  • Build strong relationships with students and foster a culture in which students see themselves as writers.
  • Establish clear classroom routines, expectations, and procedures.
  • Encourage student voice, creativity, productive struggle, and intellectual risk-taking.
  • Teach students to reflect on their learning, respond to feedback, and take ownership of their academic growth.
  • Collaborate with grade-level and content-area colleagues to plan instruction and analyze student work and data.
  • Participate actively in professional learning communities, professional development, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with families regarding student progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and student support teams to address academic, social-emotional, and learning needs.
  • Maintain accurate student records and complete required documentation.
  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and applicable legal and professional requirements.
  • Contribute positively to the school's culture and commitment to student achievement.

Other duties as assigned.

Position

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Valid Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate endorsement required.
  • Minimum 1-3 years classroom teacher experience.
  • Experience serving in an urban teaching environment preferred.
  • Excellent teacher with proven experience enabling urban students to meet high expectations
  • Reflective and receptive to providing and receiving professional feedback, video recording, and coaching
  • Collaborative, collegial, goal-oriented, mission-driven, accountable, responsible, self-managed, and self-motivated
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, and community partners.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with multiple stakeholders.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $74,500
