Disability Services Specialist

The Disability Services Specialist advises new and continuing students on disability resources and accommodations and facilitates accommodations and other disability related services under Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act. The Disability Services Specialist supports the primary functions of the department including intakes, requests for accommodations, academic and retention support, and training and development of faculty, staff and students related to compliance and inclusiveness.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Conduct interactive interviews to determine reasonable accommodations to facilitate equal access without compromising academic standards.
• Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate academic and student life accommodations including didactic, lab and clinical environments for students enrolled in University Health Science Colleges.
• Provide outreach to promote awareness of the Disability Resource Center and create training materials necessary for administration, faculty, and staff to support accommodations and assistive technology.
• Collaborate to arrange test and assistive technologies accommodations for students.
• Document and address complaints, and grievances while proposing solutions to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement.
• Confidentially review, maintain and track required documentation of requests for disability accommodations.
• Prepare and analyze student data reports to identify issues affecting student progression and develop proactive responses to address concerns.
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in disability studies, social services or related field is required. A focus on disability is preferred.
• A minimum of two years' experience working directly with adults with disabilities.
• Knowledge of Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; analytical, organizational and Microsoft Office skills.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing quality educational guidance. This includes student needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of student satisfaction.
• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people and resources.
• Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
• Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
• Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods, and techniques, university policies and procedures.
• Talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students.
• The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
