Part Time – Maximum 20 hours per week - Pay Rate: $30.00 per hour
The Upward Bound Instructor at Gary Comer Youth Center is responsible for providing high-quality educational instruction and support to high school students enrolled in the Upward Bound program. The role aims to enhance students' academic skills, prepare them for post-secondary education, and foster a supportive learning environment that encourages personal and academic growth.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with the Upward Bound curriculum and cater to the diverse learning needs of students.
- Provide individualized and group instruction in core subjects such as mathematics, science, English, and social studies.
- Assess students' academic progress regularly and adjust teaching strategies to meet their evolving needs.
- Collaborate with program staff, including academic advisors and counselors, to monitor and support students' overall academic performance and personal development.
- Organize and participate in educational workshops, college visits, and cultural enrichment activities to broaden students' exposure and readiness for higher education.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, performance, and progress reports.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and guardians to provide updates on academic progress and address any concerns.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with educational best practices and program requirements.
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student engagement and respect for diversity.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, English, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience at the high school or college level.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, preferably in an urban or community-based setting.
- Proven track record of developing and delivering engaging educational content.
- Experience with curriculum development and instructional planning.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and motivate students.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and needs.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and digital tools to enhance learning.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle challenging situations with professionalism.
The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members. The Center's work is fast paced and varied. Our work is done on site where our youth and families are. Therefore, it is required that team members meet the following requirements:
- Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
- Must be able to travel with students, including for college tours and field trips, which may occur during the school day, evenings, or weekends.
