Position Overview

The Solar Technician is a field technical resource within the region. This role is responsible for independently diagnosing and resolving complex issues across a distributed portfolio of C&I and DG solar assets.

This position is designed for an experienced solar professional who is comfortable operating with minimal technical oversight, making sound field-level judgment calls, and identifying true root causes.

The individual leads by example, mentors junior technicians in the field, and supports remote troubleshooting efforts to reduce unnecessary truck rolls and improve fleet uptime.

Experience in commercial or distributed generation-scale solar operations and maintenance is required.

Advanced Troubleshooting & Field Authority
  • Diagnose and resolve inverter faults, DC field issues, and AC-side electrical problems across a mixed fleet of DG and C&I systems.
  • Perform insulation resistance testing, DC string isolation, current/voltage analysis, and inverter HMI diagnostics to determine root cause.
  • Make informed, independent field decisions to restore production safely and efficiently.
  • Support remote troubleshooting efforts in collaboration with the Regional Manager to reduce unnecessary dispatches.
  • Verify inverter parameters via HMI when required and assess configuration integrity.
  • Operate with an ownership mindset: treat each site as if performance directly reflects personal standards.
  • Document root cause, corrective action, and follow-up steps clearly within the work order system.
  • Avoid “symptom-only” fixes; ensure corrective actions are durable and technically sound.
  • Complete JSAs and required documentation thoroughly and professionally.
Mentorship & Technical Leadership
  • Set the standard for troubleshooting methodology and professionalism.
  • Provide in-field mentorship to junior technicians when working together.
  • Model safe work practices, diagnostic discipline, and structured problem-solving.
  • Contribute to improving regional troubleshooting consistency and technical capability.
Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
  • Perform preventive maintenance across inverter systems, DC combiners, AC disconnects, and balance-of-system components.
  • Identify emerging trends in inverter downtime and proactively communicate recurring failure patterns.
  • Manage field-level spare parts usage and provide input on inventory needs.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of commercial, C&I, or utility-scale solar O&M experience.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting string or central inverter systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
Multimeters, Clamp meters, Insulation resistance testing (megger).
  • Excellent leadership and mentorship skills with the ability to guide a team of Service Technicians and Apprentices.
  • Proven ability to independently diagnose electrical issues in the DC field and inverter systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of collaborating effectively with various stakeholders, including clients, utilities, and service providers.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly between sites.
Strongly Preferred
  • Experience reducing repeat inverter faults through systematic root cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with DAS systems and performance monitoring tools.
  • Experience mentoring or guiding junior technicians in the field.
