National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader

HDR is a global engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services firm. We are seeking a National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader to focus on protection and control design matters within the power delivery substation business class.

Responsibilities
  • Drive development and implementation of a quality program within the business class to foster physical design technical growth for junior engineers.
  • Develop and implement a physical design training and career development program for the national business class.
  • Conduct quarterly training/meetings with EITs and junior engineers across the practice to discuss overall issues, success, project experience, and lessons learned.
  • Encourage technical career paths.
  • Create and maintain technical practices, standards and expectations to accomplish market sector visions and solve client problems.
  • Develop and apply technical tools, standards and techniques to enhance service quality and efficiency.
  • Develop a network of technical experts/SMEs to drive technical goals for the national practice.
  • Support open communication of production needs; collaborate with BCL to influence staffing and expertise levels.
  • Support professional development of staff and development of production tools (Best Practices, Technical Policies & Procedures, Papers & Presentations, Professional Associates credentialing, recognition of technical achievement, Practice Group activities, and Information Management and Automation Tools).
  • Lead proposal technical reviews (e.g., Blue Team Reviews).
  • Participate in root cause analysis and provide solutions for challenging project issues.
  • Participate and may lead PARRs (Project Approach Resource Review).
  • Achieve a 70% to 75% utilization goal by supporting projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active participant in ongoing technical working groups (both internally and externally).
  • Subject Matter Expert or strong knowledge of a variety of physical/outdoor design concepts, including but not limited to constructability and design criteria, bus span calculations, AC/DC sizing and loading, raceway design, cable design, material selection, BOM development, grounding design, lightning protection design, substation lighting design, major substation equipment specification development, and experience designing and reviewing general arrangements, cross-sectional arrangements, substation clearance checks, grounding packages, lightning protection studies (Rolling Sphere and Fixed Angle), lighting studies, raceway systems, cable design, rigid and strain bus design, insulator selection, arrester selection, etc.
  • Experience mentoring and coordinating physical design workshare with multiple area offices.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices, industry standards, and codes related to substation outdoor/physical design.
  • General knowledge of substation design software such as CDEGS, WinIGS, etc.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.
  • 10 years of experience.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience.
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams.
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts.
