Project Engineer – American Industrial Transport – AITX
Job SummaryThe overall responsibility of this position is to conduct engineering activities to support the AITX railcar fleet. This includes lease returns, car reassignments and repair of railcars in shops. Review and create appropriate repair projects for railcars per AAR, AWS, NACE and FRA recommended designs and regulations. This position requires the ability to perform independent research into new applications or improved techniques for repair.
Support of the AITX Customer Service and Sales departments is a key aspect of this role.
- Prepare documents such as car specifications, alternates, and cost estimates for car alterations.
- Evaluate customer specifications to determine if AITX can supply or modify a car or its features to meet requirements.
- Work closely with customers to determine product requirements, improve reliability, loading/unloading, handling, etc.
- Create projects, standards, and repair procedures to support the railcar fleet and ensure reliability.
- Work closely with repair shops for completion of repairs and railcar conversions, providing detailed instructions and drawings.
- Compile engineering data and conduct reliability analyses to define and improve service life usage.
- Work with repair shop personnel to reduce scrap, labor inefficiency, and improve processes. Utilize Lean and design‑for‑cost techniques. Recommend design changes to improve quality, performance, and reduce repair or life‑cycle costs.
- Be knowledgeable of AAR and FRA regulatory requirements that impact product design.
- Work closely with suppliers to approve their products’ application to our designs.
- Be knowledgeable of the quality assurance plan requirements as it pertains to engineering.
- Utilize CAD to develop models and drawing packages required to fabricate parts and assemble them into a completed product.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred)
- Prefer 5 years+ experience in Railcar Maintenance Engineering.
- Tank car maintenance and repair knowledge along with knowledge of FRA and AAR regulatory requirements is a plus.
