Assistant Resident Engineer (RE)

The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) supports the Resident Engineer in the on-site administration, inspection, and documentation of transportation infrastructure construction projects. This role plays a critical part in ensuring construction activities comply with contract documents, specifications, and agency requirements for IDOT and Illinois Tollway projects.
The ARE works closely with inspection staff, contractors, and the Resident Engineer to maintain quality standards, accurate reporting, and efficient project delivery across active job sites.
Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Inspection & Oversight:
- Perform and coordinate daily inspections of construction activities to verify compliance with contract plans, specifications, and engineering standards.
- Oversee and support inspection staff in monitoring contractor operations and work quality.
- Accept or reject contractor work based on conformance with contract requirements.
- Travel to project sites throughout the Chicagoland area as required.
Project Administration & Documentation:
- Prepare daily inspection reports and assist the Resident Engineer with monthly progress reports.
- Support documentation efforts, including pay item tracking, field measurements, and quantity calculations.
- Assist with monthly invoicing, change documentation, and disputed work tracking.
- Maintain accurate project records, including reports, correspondence, photos, and field documentation.
Support to Resident Engineer:
- Provide direct support to the Resident Engineer in managing construction inspection activities.
- Assist with reviewing potential change order issues and documenting field conditions.
- Help coordinate inspections, testing, and contractor activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support project success.
Quality Assurance & Safety:
- Help enforce quality standards on all assigned projects.
- Verify that contractor activities align with safety requirements and agency standards.
- Use required construction and inspection safety equipment, including fall protection.
- Must possess a B.S. in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in roadway construction preferred.
- IDOT Documentation Certified
- Proficient with CMMS (idot)
- Construction Manager in Training (CMIT)
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have a Valid Driver's License with a good driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications within specified time frames.
- Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, twist, or stoop frequently and for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors under varying weather and site conditions.
- Ability to reach horizontally and vertically as required.
- Ability to safely use construction and inspection safety equipment.
