Position: CIVIL ENGINEER V-CDOT, 2026

Civil Engineer V – Bridges and Highways

Location:

Chicago Department of Transportation, 2 N. Lasalle, Suite 820, Chicago, IL 60602. Days:
Monday–Friday.

Hours:

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Starting salary: G09 $ 109,140 annually. Position is open to the public and to all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME – Select BU 01. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Project manage bridge projects, including scheduling, contracting, funding, and procurement.
  • Supervise subordinate engineers and inspectors; review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Perform field surveys to identify conditions that may impact project scope and recommend modifications.
  • Write specifications, evaluate and approve contractor changes, monitor work progress, and ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Interpret design plans, resolve design and construction problems, and prepare status and cost reports.
  • Approve partial and final payments to contractors and review payment requests for compliance with completed work.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field + 3 years of civil engineering experience, including 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Alternative:
    Master’s or Doctorate in Civil Engineering or related field + 2 years of civil engineering experience, including 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
    • Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) in Illinois.
    • Valid Illinois driver’s license.
    PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience as a design or project engineer on bridge projects.
    • Experience performing field inspections on bridge or roadway infrastructure.
    • Experience designing bridge repairs.
    • Experience reviewing project scopes, calculations, plans, specifications, and estimates.
    • Experience working with transportation agencies such as CDOT, IDOT, FHWA.
    • Project management experience in urban transportation design or construction projects.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (One Note, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
