We're representing a nationally recognized engineering firm with approximately 2,500 employees and a strong presence across transportation and infrastructure markets.
They are seeing an experienced Resident Engineer in Chicago to lead transportation construction oversight efforts on major public infrastructure projects. This is a highly visible field leadership role responsible for managing construction phase activities, coordinating with contractors and public agencies, and ensuring successful project delivery in accordance with DOT and client standards.
Key Responsibilities- Lead daily construction oversight activities for transportation infrastructure projects
- Manage and direct inspection staff and field teams
- Coordinate with contractors, clients, public agencies, and internal engineering teams
- Chair construction progress meetings and support pre-construction planning efforts
- Review contractor pay estimates, schedules, and construction documentation
- Interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents to resolve field and design issues
- Oversee quality control, materials testing coordination, and construction compliance
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and in accordance with DOT/client standards
- Maintain accurate project records, reports, and documentation
- 10+ years of experience in civil or transportation engineering with construction oversight responsibility
- Proven experience serving in a Resident Engineer or similar field leadership role
- Strong background in roadway, bridge, or public infrastructure construction projects
- Experience managing DOT-related projects and compliance requirements
- Strong understanding of construction inspection, documentation, scheduling, and pay estimates
- Ability to effectively coordinate with contractors, agencies, and multidisciplinary teams
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required in applicable state
- DOT certifications preferred or required depending on project needs
