Description

David Mason + Associates' Power & Utilities Team is looking for an Electrical Engineer to with previous Physical Substation Design experience to join our Chicago-based team.

Our ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering & has 4+ years of utility-scale substation [PHYSICAL] design. Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Illinois is a plus!

Essential Duties:
  • Develop and oversee the production of complete substation physical design packages, including:
    • General arrangements, elevation views, cross-sections, grounding plans, conduit and cable plans, and equipment layouts.
    • Construction drawings, specifications, Bills of Material (BOM), and design calculations.
  • Specify high-voltage substation equipment such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, buswork, and support structures.
  • Perform engineering calculations for bus sizing, grounding, lightning protection, and thermal ratings.
  • Support the engineer's opinion of probable construction cost and assist in estimating materials, equipment, and labor.
  • Monitor and manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Delegate and oversee design tasks assigned to Technicians, Designers, and Staff Engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members and support their training and development.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, protection & control, and SCADA teams to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
  • Collaborate with owners, contractors, and field personnel to resolve design clarifications, conflicts, and changes during construction.
  • Conduct site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, inspections, and as-built documentation.
  • Support proposal development, project budgeting, billing, and accounts receivable tracking.
  • Participate in business development activities and client engagement as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NEC, ASCE) and company safety policies.
  • May sign/seal drawings or other required documentation based on division and firm policies
  • Follow and abide by the employee and safety manuals
  • Completes other duties as assigned
