David Mason + Associates' Power & Utilities Team is looking for an Electrical Engineer to with previous Physical Substation Design experience to join our Chicago-based team.
Our ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering & has 4+ years of utility-scale substation [PHYSICAL] design. Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Illinois is a plus!

- Develop and oversee the production of complete substation physical design packages, including:
- General arrangements, elevation views, cross-sections, grounding plans, conduit and cable plans, and equipment layouts.
- Construction drawings, specifications, Bills of Material (BOM), and design calculations.
- Specify high-voltage substation equipment such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, buswork, and support structures.
- Perform engineering calculations for bus sizing, grounding, lightning protection, and thermal ratings.
- Support the engineer's opinion of probable construction cost and assist in estimating materials, equipment, and labor.
- Monitor and manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Delegate and oversee design tasks assigned to Technicians, Designers, and Staff Engineers.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members and support their training and development.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, protection & control, and SCADA teams to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
- Collaborate with owners, contractors, and field personnel to resolve design clarifications, conflicts, and changes during construction.
- Conduct site visits for data collection, constructability reviews, inspections, and as-built documentation.
- Support proposal development, project budgeting, billing, and accounts receivable tracking.
- Participate in business development activities and client engagement as needed.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NEC, ASCE) and company safety policies.
- May sign/seal drawings or other required documentation based on division and firm policies
- Follow and abide by the employee and safety manuals
- Completes other duties as assigned
