Job Description

Collaboratively work in partnership with our Chicago Branch Office Manager to lead civil engineering design projects in a team‑oriented environment. Project emphasis is transportation engineering design for both public and private sectors which range in scope from small to multimillion‑dollar designs. Services are provided to a wide range of clients that include state DOTs and other governmental agencies – municipal, county and state.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for delivering quality highway/roadway design plans that meet client expectations and adhere to project budgets and schedules
  • Collaborate with both internal and external team members including other design disciplines
  • Provide training to staff‑level engineers
  • Participate in project proposal preparation and client presentation
  • Responsible for being the Engineer of Record on projects, point of contact for clients
  • Performs other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Illinois required
  • 15+ years of experience in civil/highway design projects for state DOT, County, City and/or other municipal clients
  • Expert knowledge of IDOT/Tollway plan development guidelines and standards
  • Proven track record of leading multiple design projects concurrently, taking projects from pursuit through final plan delivery
  • Experience with Project Management methodologies and best practices
  • Experience in coordinating and collaborating with specialty discipline leads (Traffic, Hydraulics, Structures) and with subconsultants and training staff‑level engineers
  • Familiarity with procedures, methodologies, and standards including but limited to the HCM, MUTCD, AASHTO, US Access Board guidelines

    Proficiency in Micro Station, Geopak, InRoads, and/or Open Roads Designer (ORD) within IDOT/Tollway and other agency CADD environments
  • Proficiency with Excel and other general office software
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and organizational skills
Preferred Experience
  • Desire to be involved with business development and project pursuits
  • Experience in giving client presentations
  • Experience with developing, negotiating and reviewing design fee proposals and contracts
  • Additional experience:
    • Hydraulics Modeling and Drainage Design
    • Intersection/Interchange Design Studies (IDS)
    • Traffic Studies and Signal Warrants
    • Crash Analysis and Safety Studies
Physical Qualifications
  • Ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods
  • Visual focus for electronic documents and design software
