Overview

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Director of Electrical Engineering, the Mechanical Engineer II will perform mechanical design, engineering, construction management, and maintenance assistance on Metra commuter railroad lines, including yards, shops, substation systems, facilities, commuter stations, and Metra's headquarters. The role includes preparing design packages with drawings, mechanical equipment specifications, and cooling and heating load calculations for various facilities and Building Automation System (BAS) control systems to ensure compliance with National and Chicago Mechanical and Plumbing Codes, NFPA, ASHRAE, and mechanical industry standards.

Construction management duties will involve bidding, contract awarding, monitoring and inspecting job sites, resolving construction problems, contract modifications, change orders, and invoice payments. Responsibilities also include supervising consultant blanket contracts, developing scope of work, organizing design meetings and phase reviews, providing capital and maintenance project cost estimates and studies, developing project construction schedules, completing Grant Department project request forms, and budget cost estimates.

The Mechanical Engineer II will provide direction and field assistance to maintenance electricians and outside contractors in evaluating existing mechanical and electrical systems, and perform related duties as needed.

Requirements
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Must have five (5) years of mechanical engineering experience in design of mechanical systems, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm and fueling systems, compressed air systems, BAS control and other railroad specific mechanical systems.
  • Must have working knowledge of AUTOCAD or Micro Station software.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and control management procedures, Hourly Analysis Program (HAP), Trane cooling and heating load software, and BAS controls.
  • Knowledge of Chicago Mechanical Code, Chicago Building Code, NFPA, ASHRAE, plumbing codes.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Preferences
  • Professional Engineer license in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Class A, B & C certification for Underground Storage Tanks (UST) preferred.
