VENTILATION AND FURNACE INSPECTOR (416100)
Under general supervision, reviews building plans and specifications and conducts inspections of heating, ventilating, and related mechanical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with applicable provisions of the Chicago Construction Codes, adopted standards, and approved permit documents; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Reviews plans, drawings, and construction specifications for warm-air heating and mechanical ventilation systems submitted in support of building permit applications to determine compliance with applicable code requirements.
- Conducts field inspections of new and existing heating and mechanical ventilation systems to verify compliance with approved permit plans, construction specifications, applicable codes, and industry standards.
- Inspects construction sites to verify that required permits have been obtained and that work is being performed by properly licensed and registered contractors.
- Examines materials, equipment, and methods of installation to ensure compliance with approved plans, manufacturer specifications, and applicable code requirements.
- Investigates complaints and responds to inquiries regarding heating and mechanical ventilation systems and related code requirements.
- Interprets and explains applicable code provisions, inspection findings, and corrective actions to contractors, property owners, tenants, design professionals, and other stakeholders.
- Identifies code violations and issues correction notices, citations, and other enforcement actions as authorized.
- Conducts follow-up inspections to verify that cited violations have been corrected and that installations comply with applicable code requirements.
- Maintains accurate inspection records, prepares reports, and documents inspection findings and enforcement actions.
- Provides testimony in Circuit Court proceedings regarding inspection findings, code violations, and enforcement actions.
- Works collaboratively with other City departments, agencies, and stakeholders on matters involving heating and mechanical ventilation systems.
Additional duties may be required for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Successful completion of a US Department of Labor‑registered sheet metal apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, OR
Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:
- Successful completion of an industry or company-sponsored apprenticeship training program in the sheet metal trade, plus two (2) years of journey‑level work experience in the sheet metal trade
- Six (6) years of journey‑level experience in the sheet metal trade
- A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required
- Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability
- General office environment
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust
- Exposure to extreme temperatures
- Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites)
- Work performed above or below ground level
- Work performed using scaffolds and a ladder
