Engineering Intern Co-op

As a part of the global industrial organization Marmon Holdings—a Berkshire Hathaway company—this design‑ and improvement‑focused internship supports the deployment, evaluation, and implementation of Lean initiatives across the Marmon Transportation Group. You will collaborate with plant employees at all levels to identify process gaps and drive continuous‑improvement programs that enhance safety, quality, delivery, cost, and employee development.

• Collaborate with local teams to identify process gaps and implement improvement activities focused on key business metrics.
• Manage lean transformation activities and projects at the plant.
• Partner with the automation team to optimize processes before automation and justify automation projects.
• Facilitate Value Stream Mapping and Kaizen/Impact Events, including A3 charter creation, pre‑work, delivery of results, and sustainment follow‑up.
• Lead conversations with teams to keep action items on track and foster accountability.
• Provide formal and informal training, coaching, and mentoring to translate Lean concepts into local practice.
• Coach process owners on applying engineering and Lean tools for operational excellence.
• Establish performance measures and report data and actions to track progress against plant objectives.
• Work with site leadership to assess critical sites and align with business needs.
• Ensure results are delivered, future states achieved, and operational priorities are reflected in decisions.
• Lead and participate in regular Management Review meetings.
• Plan and prioritize travel and projects, communicating progress to leadership.
• Develop personal and plant competency plans for continuous‑improvement methods.

• Energy, enthusiasm, and initiative to develop and drive improvement programs.
• Ability to influence and lead without formal authority.
• 21‑50% travel to other facilities acceptable.
• Independent, self‑starter who builds relationships and earns trust.
• Strong prioritization skills based on impact and business needs.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Smartsheets).

• Experience with Lean/Automation through jobs, internships, co‑ops, class projects, or extracurricular activities.
• Knowledge of Solid Works, Fusion 360, or other CAD packages.
• Prior internship experience in continuous improvement; willingness to work 4–12 hours per week during the school year before and after the internship.

Preferred Metropolitan Detroit, Chicagoland area. Other accepted locations include the Midwest, Carolinas, and Virginia.

Pay Range: $18.40 – $27.60 per hour.
