Position Summary

Our client is a highly respected nuclear A/E firm who has been experiencing tremendous growth. They are seeking a highly qualified Nuclear Fire Protection Engineer to support the design, licensing and analysis fire protection upgrades for nuclear facilities. This role is responsible for ensuring that fire protection systems, structures, processes, and procedures meet applicable nuclear safety, fire protection, regulatory, and industry requirements.

This position will perform other design and program engineering support, based on qualifications. The successful candidate will work closely with the design engineering team and the site fire protection, operations, licensing, and emergency preparedness stakeholders to ensure compliant and successful upgrades and modifications. Contract or direct hire. 100% remote. $80-95/hr or comparable perm salary.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. Experience in fire protection engineering for commercial nuclear power plants. Knowledge of fire protection engineering principles, fire dynamics, fire detection and suppression systems, fire barriers, and fire risk assessment. Familiarity with applicable nuclear regulations, fire protection codes, and industry standards. Experience with NRC fire protection requirements and nuclear licensing bases.

Familiarity with NFPA 805, Appendix R, or other applicable nuclear fire protection standards. Strong technical writing, engineering analysis, and problem-solving skills. Some background in developing design mod packages. Ability to interpret technical requirements and apply engineering judgment to complex safety-related issues. Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with probabilistic risk assessment, fire PRA, fire modeling, or risk-informed decision-making. Experience with fire protection system design, testing, inspection, and maintenance. Experience supporting regulatory inspections, audits, or licensing activities. Knowledge of nuclear safety analysis, defense-in-depth, and safety-related design requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Perform fire hazard analyses, fire risk evaluations, fire area assessments, and fire protection engineering calculations. SME support for modifications that upgrade or replace fire protection features, including detection and alarm systems, suppression systems, fire barriers, fire doors, fire dampers, fire pumps, water supplies, and passive fire protection systems. Support compliance with applicable nuclear regulatory requirements, fire protection codes, standards, and industry guidance.

Interpret and apply requirements from organizations such as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and other applicable regulatory and consensus standards. Perform or support deterministic and risk-informed fire protection analyses. Evaluate the impact of fire hazards on nuclear safety-related, non-safety-related and risk-significant systems, structures, and components. Develop technical reports, calculations, engineering evaluations, procedures, specifications, and licensing documentation.

Support fire protection system design, modifications, testing, inspection, and maintenance activities. Participate in design reviews, configuration management activities, and plant modification projects. Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to resolve complex technical issues.
