Position: Phase I - Environmental Scientist

Summary

Geologist or Environmental Scientist with a minimum of three years relevant experience.

Under general direction of the Department Manager, functions as a Geologist or Environmental Scientist within the Environmental Department. In general, the Geologist or Environmental Scientist would work under the general supervision of project manager(s) to complete assigned tasks for utility clients. Tasks are anticipated to include: preparing drafts of work plans and reports with minimal direction from project manager(s); completing field work (including interior and exterior projects in all weather conditions);

coordination and oversight of subcontractors; and assistance with preparation of proposals. Field work will include regular travel to, and from, job sites within the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Periodically, as project needs dictate, field work may include overnight travel to various locations outside of the Chicago region for several nights.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide field work and support including soil, surface water, and groundwater sample collection, site field investigation and assessment, and subcontractor oversight. Field work will include regular travel to, and from, job sites within the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Periodically, as project needs dictate, field support may include overnight travel to various locations outside of the Chicago region for up to several nights.

Provide office support to project manager(s) for utility clients. This will include preparation of detailed technical reports, work plans, proposals, and management of subcontractors. Work, including preparation of detailed technical reports and work plans, will be expected to be completed with minimal direction from project manager(s).

Obtain and maintain required utility client safety training, and 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification and complete yearly OSHA HAZWOPER 8-hour refresher training to provide field support.

Provide general Environmental Department technical assistance and support for EDI utility projects in accordance with EDI Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Maintain and deepen a working knowledge of the applicable federal, state, and local regulations and other applicable regulations as they pertain to Environmental Department activities. Possession of a working knowledge of regulations and standards including but not limited to:
Phase I ESA ASTM E1527-13 Standard, Phase II ESA ASTM E1903-11 Standard, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Site Remediation Program (SRP), and IEPA Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Program is expected.

You will be expected to gradually assume more project responsibility and advance within EDI by exhibiting initiative, self-direction, and good judgment.

Obtain and maintain other environmental related certifications and licensing in Illinois as determined by the Department Manager. In addition, at the request of the Department Manager, obtain and maintain same in other states as required to meet regulatory, project and client needs.
