Manager - Investment Accounting (Reinsurance Portfolios)
Location: Chicago Suburbs | Hybrid Work Model
Compensation: $120,000-$150,000 base + performance incentive + comprehensive benefits
A well-capitalized, growth-oriented life insurance organization is seeking a Manager of Investment Accounting to oversee accounting and reporting for assets supporting newly executed reinsurance transactions. This role sits at the intersection of investment strategy, insurance accounting, and structured reinsurance arrangements. It requires a professional capable of interpreting complex transaction mechanics, investment guidelines, and trust structures while ensuring precision in GAAP and statutory reporting.
This is not a traditional back-office investment accounting role. It requires structural understanding, analytical rigor, and direct engagement with internal investment leadership and external counter parties.
You will assume ownership of accounting oversight for investment portfolios backing reinsurance transactions. Success in this role requires developing a comprehensive understanding of:
- Reinsurance agreement structures
- Investment mandates and asset allocation strategies
- Trust and collateral requirements
- Regulatory and contractual reporting implications
You will serve as a key accounting voice in investment-related decision support and ensure that transactions are recorded accurately and reported in compliance with both U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting principles.
Core Responsibilities- Lead accounting oversight for investment assets supporting reinsurance structures
- Analyze and interpret transaction documentation, investment guidelines, and trust provisions to determine appropriate accounting treatment
- Partner directly with internal investment and corporate development teams to evaluate accounting implications of asset strategy decisions
- Coordinate with third‑party cedents and external investment managers to ensure complete and accurate transaction recording
- Oversee investment accounting processes within Clearwater (or comparable platforms)
- Support preparation and review of GAAP and statutory financial statements related to investment portfolios
- Ensure compliance with reinsurance agreements, regulatory requirements, and internal accounting policies
- Strengthen and execute financial reporting control frameworks
- Identify operational inefficiencies and implement process improvements leveraging system enhancements, automation, and emerging technologies
This opportunity is specifically targeted to candidates who meet the following minimum standards:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
- 4+ years of progressive experience in investment accounting, insurance accounting, or a blended investment/insurance reporting function
- Demonstrated understanding of U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting (SAP)
- Working knowledge of investment instruments and reinsurance structures
- Experience executing or operating within financial reporting control environments
- Strong ability to communicate technical accounting matters to investment professionals and non-accounting stakeholders
- Public accounting, external audit or advisory experience
- CPA, CMA, or advanced degree
- Direct exposure to life insurance or reinsurance-backed asset portfolios
- Hands‑on experience with Clearwater investment accounting software
- ERP proficiency (SAP, Oracle, Workday, or similar enterprise systems)
- Familiarity with automation tools, data analytics platforms, or AI-enabled reporting enhancements
- Intellectual curiosity and comfort navigating evolving transaction structures
- Strong technical judgment and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic growth environment
- Strategic mindset capable of aligning accounting conclusions with broader business objectives
