GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting, finance, and reporting functions around monthly close, financial reporting, budgeting/forecasting, and all audits within the Food Depository. The Controller will identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability, maintain internal controls, and support the VP of Finance and senior leadership in financial decisions and reporting. The Controller is also responsible for mentoring and developing high‑performing members of the Finance/Accounting team, providing professional growth and leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Oversee the maintenance and training of all financial and accounting systems (Ceres, Prophix, Procure to Pay, and all banking user administrators). This includes:

    • Ensure precise setup and configuration of all accounting modules.
    • Administer, monitor, and manage financial database operations to guarantee the accuracy of financial reporting data used for management’s operating analyses.
    • Verify that all functional areas and processes adhere to internal control requirements.
    • Deliver technical training across the organization pertaining to the accounting system.
    • Implement ongoing system enhancements to improve organizational efficiency.
  • Responsible for and manage the timely and accurate preparation and completion of:

    • Month‑end close reporting.
    • Quarterly and annual budgeting/forecasting.
    • Mandatory financial, state, and government audits.
    • Required tax filings for the NFP.
    • Feeding America required reporting.
    • Inventory cycle counts.
    • Other financial reporting and analytical needs as directed.
  • Plan and administer all financial audits and respective data collection with external auditors and internal contacts, including the financial statement, Single Audit, 403b/5500, IRS 990, and any governmental specific audits.
  • Provide oversight of financial reporting associated with all revenue streams, including government grants and private philanthropic contributions.
  • Collaborate with the Development team on all financial activity, data analytics, reporting, and key metrics within gift processing; identify and implement process improvements where applicable.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce robust accounting controls, policies, and procedures to ensure the integrity of financial reporting. Create new workflows and efficiencies as needed.
  • Guarantee compliance with all relevant governmental entities and agencies, ensuring timely and accurate submission of federal and state tax reports.
  • Assist in managing treasury functions, including cash management, short‑term investment, disbursement planning, cash inflow forecasting, and advising on investment actions as appropriate.
  • Oversee all Accounts Payable operations, including vendor management and payment processing.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives, serving as a liaison between Finance and other departments to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Champion financial stewardship in decision‑making processes and promote prudent financial practices among staff.
  • Monitor performance and productivity levels of direct reports, oversee recruitment and training of new employees, address disciplinary matters, facilitate conflict resolution, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Serve as an expert resource on financial statement matters by remaining current on GAAP and UPMIFA standards.
  • Execute special projects assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CPA preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years not‑for‑profit accounting experience required.
    • Solid experience in coordinating audit activities and financial reporting, budgeting/forecasting, and general ledger.
    • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner, including presentations to senior management, board members and outside partners.
    • Technology savvy with experience overseeing software installations and managing relationships with project managers/vendors, including advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
    • Proficiency in MS Office—Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
