Overview

Senior Commercial Underwriter (Officer / AVP)

Location: Aurora, IL;
Chicago, IL;
Downers Grove, IL (Hybrid)

The Senior Commercial Underwriter is responsible for analyzing financial information and underwriting commercial loan requests. This role includes spreading financial statements, assigning risk ratings, preparing exception reporting, and ensuring compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory guidelines.

This individual operates at a high level of autonomy, handling complex credits, working efficiently, and resolving issues independently.

Responsibilities
  • Spread and analyze borrower financial statements in collaboration with commercial lenders
  • Independently complete complex underwriting assignments
  • Analyze credit risk and assign appropriate loan risk ratings
  • Prepare and review monthly exception reporting
  • Serve as a resource regarding credit policy and regulatory requirements
  • Partner with lenders on joint customer calls to support credit and sales development
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced analysts
  • Review and discuss complex credit structures, making covenant and structuring recommendations
  • Assist with preparation of loan presentations
  • Participate in collateral inspections when needed
  • Support special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in commercial banking, credit, or finance (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Core Competencies
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, leverage analysis, and risk ratios
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of commercial credit principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Effective time management in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of commercial credit or underwriting experience
  • Completion of a formal bank credit training program
  • Experience working within a change management environment
Work Structure

This is a hybrid position combining remote and onsite work, subject to business needs.

Compensation

$85,000 per year
