As the Controller, you will lead the organization’s accounting and financial reporting functions, including close, budgeting, forecasting, and audits. You will strengthen internal controls, drive efficiency and financial performance, partner with senior leadership on strategic decision-making, and develop a high-performing Finance and Accounting team in an evolving environment.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and maintain all financial and accounting systems, ensuring accurate configuration, data integrity, internal controls, user administration, and organization-wide training; implement ongoing system enhancements to improve efficiency
- Lead the timely and accurate completion of month-end close, budgeting and forecasting, audits, tax filings, inventory counts, required nonprofit and regulatory reporting, and ad hoc financial analyses
- Plan, manage, and coordinate all external and internal audits, including financial statements, Single Audit, 403(b)/5500, IRS Form 990, and government-specific audits
- Provide oversight of financial reporting across all revenue streams, including government grants and philanthropic contributions
- Partner with the Development team on gift processing, financial reporting, data analysis, and performance metrics, identifying opportunities for process improvement
- Develop, implement, and enforce accounting policies, controls, and procedures to safeguard the integrity of financial reporting and improve workflows
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and regulatory requirements, including the timely submission of all required tax and government reports
- Support treasury and cash management functions, including forecasting, disbursements, short-term investments, and liquidity planning
- Oversee Accounts Payable operations, including vendor management and payment processing
- Lead cross-functional process improvement initiatives, strengthening collaboration between Finance and other departments
- Promote sound financial stewardship and prudent decision-making across the organization
- Manage, mentor, and evaluate Finance staff, including recruitment, training, performance management, and conflict resolution
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on financial reporting, maintaining current knowledge of GAAP and UPMIFA standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA preferred
- 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience, with strong expertise in audits, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and general ledger management
- Proven ability to lead and coordinate audit activities and communicate complex financial information clearly to senior leadership, board members, and external partners
- Highly technology proficient, with experience overseeing financial systems implementations and managing vendor and project manager relationships; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook
- Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement effective process improvements
- Strong people leadership skills, with a commitment to recruiting, mentoring, developing, and retaining high-performing teams
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments, interacting regularly with staff, auditors, vendors, and partner agencies
- Comfortable working in a standard office environment with periodic exposure to warehouse operations
Compensation
- Salary: $150,000 - $160,000
