Job Description
We are seeking a Mortgage Loan Officer to join our Chatham, IL team! Mortgage Loan Officers provide information on credit union products and services to potential borrowers according to all credit union policies and procedures as well as Federal and State rules and regulations. They interview applicants for real estate loans, prepare, analyze, process and document all required forms, and approve or deny loan applications based on analysis of each applicant's background.
They promote credit union products and services to meet productivity goals.
- Meet with loan applicants to discuss mortgage options, counsel on credit and budget, develop roadmap for mortgage approval and assist with the loan application process, and achieve productivity goals.
- Prequalify loan applicants by examining all borrower information, assessing creditworthiness, adequacy of income, credit and collateral, calculating repayment risk, and determining the maximum purchase price/loan amount. Approve or deny applications that do not meet pre‑qualification standards and explain reasons for denial.
- Gather and review necessary data to complete the loan review process, including credit bureau reports, verifying debts, and estimating monthly payments for outstanding debts not listed on the application.
- Comply with all federal and state mortgage regulations and disclosure requirements.
- Prepare mortgage loan application and documentation for underwriting and closing, ensuring accurate processing, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining communication with borrowers throughout the process.
- Develop mortgage loan business by building and maintaining a network of business relationships with real estate professionals, builders, and other referral sources, and participating in community efforts to promote home ownership.
- High School Diploma;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - At least 2 years of experience in mortgage, banking, or comparable field; preference for consumer lending experience.
- Ability to represent Self‑Help in networking functions and build relationships with realtors and other referral sources.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills; ability to independently handle loan applications and assess borrower repayment ability.
- Consistent adherence to file quality guidelines and productivity goals.
- Secure and maintain NMLS certification.
- Team‑collaborative mindset.
- Sensitivity to low‑wealth borrower issues and desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization.
- Strong organizational, computer, and customer‑service skills.
- Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Spanish/English bilingualism is a plus.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Compensation range depending on experience and geographical location: MIN $56,770, MID $70,962, MAX $79,584.
