ResponsibilitiesBaker Tilly is recruiting a Director to join the State & Local Tax (SALT) practice in Chicago with a focus on indirect tax. The SALT practice serves over 100 professionals nationwide, delivering services including income & franchise tax, sales & use tax, real & personal property tax, unclaimed property, and voluntary disclosure & remediation. The Director will help clients achieve compliance, reduce expenses, and enhance cash flow.

- Be a trusted advisor to middle‑market and Fortune 500 clients, providing strategic state & local tax consulting that lowers tax rates, ensures compliance, and adds value across the spectrum of state and local taxes, including:
- Managing multi‑disciplinary, multi‑state reviews to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives, and corporate structures that reduce tax burden.
- Researching state tax issues such as nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and potential liability quantification.
- Counseling clients on state & local tax controversies, drafting correspondence, preparing ruling requests, and guiding defense against audits.
- Planning and executing tax projects requiring broad expertise, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
- Preparing technical memoranda on state & local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and LLCs.
- Maintaining active client communication, recommending business and process improvements, managing expectations, and enhancing value.
- Assist with client engagement staffing, billings/collections, and ensure client profitability targets are met.
- Utilize entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally.
- Invest in professional development individually and through firm‑wide learning programs.
- Support the growth and development of team members through the Baker Tilly Care and Teach philosophy, helping associates meet professional goals.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required;
Master’s in Taxation, LLM accepted. - CPA and/or JD certification required.
- 10+ years experience in state & local tax.
- 5+ years supervisory experience with mentoring and counseling associates desired.
- Experience as a client‑serving professional in a consulting firm desired.
- Ability to lead and supervise, provide exceptional client service, demonstrate continuous learning, see the big picture, exhibit ethical knowledge, and commit to timely, quality project completion.
In Chicago and Oakbrook, IL: pay rate range is $257,140 to $337,490.
