Community Finance builds inclusive, thriving resident-centered communities that catalyze opportunity and promote well-being. The team originates debt and invests in low‑income housing through proprietary and multi‑investor fund structures.
The Underwriting, Portfolio & Loan Management (UWPLM) team oversees risk assessment, evaluation, management, and administration of individual loans and investments and the entire portfolio. The team underwrites new affordable housing transactions, manages and administers the portfolio of debt and equity exposure, and ensures a scalable and well‑managed business.
As a Senior Director, Underwriting & Portfolio Management (UWPM) Lead, you will lead different regions, a multifund function, and be a strategic people leader within the Community Finance Underwriting & Portfolio Management (UWPM) team.
You will be responsible for defining the overarching governance frameworks, managing emerging and current portfolio risks, driving commercial and business growth, and cultivating deep, long‑term relationships with key internal and external stakeholders across the affordable housing ecosystem.
Primary Responsibilities- Provide strategic direction and oversight for underwriting and portfolio management.
- Lead the analysis, assessment, and mitigation of risk at the portfolio, fund, and individual facility level for both debt and equity transactions.
- Lead credit and investment approvals, ensuring alignment with Capital One’s risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee pipeline evaluation analytics to enable efficient closing, initial funding, and post‑closing servicing in collaboration with Originations and Loan/Equity Administration leaders.
- Manage and conduct periodic portfolio and industry reviews to forecast and identify emerging themes, risks, and issues across Underwriting, Portfolio Management, Booking, and Servicing.
- Develop and maintain relationships with syndicators, developers, investors, and government agencies.
- Drive innovation and process improvements in underwriting, risk management, and portfolio management.
- Hire, lead, and mentor a high‑performing team, fostering a culture of professional development, innovation, and operational efficiency.
- Partner with horizontal leadership to educate and develop associates on evolving market trends. Serve as a thought leader and brand ambassador for Capital One Community Finance at external panels, conferences, and industry convenings.
- Bachelor’s degree or military experience.
- At least 12 years of experience in underwriting, asset management, portfolio management or any combination of the three in the field of affordable housing or commercial real estate.
- Master’s degree in Finance, Real Estate, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in construction lending, LIHTC investment, syndication, or asset management.
- 7+ years of people leadership experience.
- Proven ability to lead teams and complex problem‑solving skills.

The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part‑time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
