Our client is a well-established, mission-driven nonprofit financial institution dedicated to expanding access to affordable housing and community investment. Capitalized by a consortium of leading financial institutions, the organization provides financing for the acquisition, rehabilitation, and preservation of affordable multifamily housing while supporting neighborhood revitalization and economic development.

The organization has originated more $1.8 billion in financing, manages an active loan servicing portfolio of approximately $300 million
, and annually originates approximately $60 million in new loans. The organization has earned a strong reputation for financial stewardship, lending expertise, and community impact.

Position Summary

The Interim Controller/Finance Director will provide hands‑on leadership of the organization's accounting and financial reporting functions during a leadership transition. Reporting to the President & CEO and partnering closely with senior leadership, this role will oversee the day‑to‑day accounting operations, ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, and support ongoing lending and loan servicing activities.

This individual will provide continuity for the finance team while supporting the organization through the search for a permanent finance leader.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure the integrity of financial reporting.
  • Review account reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Assist with budget monitoring and financial analysis.
Audit & Compliance
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and related schedules.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.
Treasury & Cash Management
  • Monitor cash flow and daily liquidity.
  • Assist with treasury activities, banking relationships, and cash forecasting.
  • Support debt compliance and lender reporting as needed.
Loan Portfolio & Operations Support
  • Support accounting and reporting related to the organization's loan portfolio.
  • Partner with loan servicing personnel to ensure accurate accounting for loan activity, escrow balances, and servicing transactions.
  • Assist with financial reporting related to lending operations and portfolio performance.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
  • Help prioritize workload and maintain continuity during the transition.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 8-12+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or Finance Manager.
  • Experience with in nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, commercial banking, CDFIs, affordable housing finance, or specialty lending organizations is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit coordination.
  • Experience with loan accounting or servicing operations is highly desirable.
  • Ability to quickly assess processes, establish credibility, and provide hands‑on leadership.

They bring strong technical accounting skills, sound judgment, and the ability to stabilize and support an accounting function during a period of transition. Experience working within lending organizations, community development finance, or nonprofit financial institutions will be highly valued.
