Job Summary
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry‑specific knowledge to advise clients on tax implications, evaluating alternatives to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and identifying methods of complying with tax regulations. The role serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues, makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal or state agencies, and participates in marketing, networking, and business development.
The Tax Managing Director is a critical member of the office/region leadership team and provides direct supervision as a final or secondary reviewer under the partner.
- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Achieve engagement management metrics and practice hands‑on client service delivery.
- Encourage team adherence to TQM policies (engagement letters, documentation, etc.).
- Research
- Identify when research is needed, frame issues, and report analyses clearly.
- Provide research methodology and act as technical reviewers of WTAs in relevant areas.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Apply Firm policies and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Leverage technical expertise in international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.
- Review and apply income tax provisions efficiently.
- Tax Consulting
- Develop and recommend methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes.
- Combine tax knowledge with business/industry insights to recommend solutions.
- Apply general knowledge across multiple tax specialties (e.g., International, SALT, Estate Planning).
- Tax Specialization
- Develop in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits, and incentives.
- Maintain expert knowledge of standards and act as an industry expert within the specialization.
- Advise on tax implications and recommend alternative compliance methods.
- Strategy Development
- Introduce and develop new ideas to improve client positions, firm operations, or personnel.
- Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients as required.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as necessary.
- Review work prepared by staff and provide comments.
- Serve as Career Advisor to staff.
- Schedule and manage workload of associate and manager levels.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree (Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics).
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to delegate work effectively.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills with sound decision‑making capabilities.
- Team‑work orientation and capacity to manage a team of tax professionals.
- Ability to compose written tax advice and maintain client relationships.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for complex issues.
- Ten (10) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) required.
- Other professional degrees or certifications relevant to the role preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
