Valuations Opinions Group Manager

Firm wide – 700 or so

The group you will work in:
Valuations Opinions

Great upward mobility- MD already – only a 2008 grad

Hours

The busy season is an approximate 6 weeks around the quarter ends, 3 before and 3 after the quarter close, ie 03/31, 06/30, 09/30, 12/31

We can get up to quite a bit like 80 for the two weeks before and one week after quarter end (i.e. right now, next and the week after). The surrounding weeks are closer to 60.

The hours are much more standard out of the 6 to 8 weeks of busy time. Outside of busy time, it can be close to 40 to 50 hours – we encourage people to take time off, vacation etc during this time. People really like this visibility. During the week, we are focused on regular portfolio valuation client work, opinions as well as initiatives to prepare us for the upcoming quarter.

Specific to the role

Questions I asked and answers:

How many concurrent engagements with the VP manage at any given moment?

Depends on the size of your clients – if you handle large ones, it can be as few as 3 to 5. If smaller, it can be as much as 10+. We look at it more on a # of portfolio companies basis

The average size of the team they will manage?

Again depends on the size of the client's portfolio – could be 1 or 2 analysts or could be 20+ with associate / other VP support

Does the new hire need business development or sales experience? Ie. Bringing in business

Nope – should still have presentation skills and be able to present in pitches but no need to demonstrate like a book of business, etc.

Why are we looking to hire? Growth or to replace someone that left?

GROWTHH – always growth in VOG – such low turnover

Comp range and bonus

Base around the 160k mark with a bonus between 50-75%. This will commensurate with experience, skillset, education, etc. Key is experience specifically in Portfolio Valuation.

The new hire can expect to be 250k-280k range…. I have seen directors make that at other firms. The group has been doing very well, and it's growing organically picking up a lot of new work.

They have hired close to 10 new analysts in 2020 (even during COVID 19), year on year they already up 30% on the number of valuations they perform, it's close to 2000 per quarter-end. Hence, that bonus target will in all likelihood be met.
