Finance & Risk Intern

As a Finance & Risk Intern, you'll get hands-on exposure to how bp supports trading activity in fast-moving commodity markets. Finance and Risk help monitor, report, and control the risks connected to trading activity, including market exposure, profit and loss, pricing, and trading controls. You'll learn how finance and risk teams work with trading benches to understand market movements, explain performance, and help protect bp through strong controls.
During the internship, you'll build technical and non-technical skills through on-the-job learning, employee-led training sessions, e-learning, mentorship, and project work. You'll have opportunities to use digital tools, analyze data, ask questions, solve problems, and communicate insights to people across Finance, Risk, and Trading & Shipping. Successful interns may be considered for a full-time role within our Finance and Risk Graduate Development Program after earning their degree.
What you might do day to day:
- Review daily trading activity and help validate exposure, profit and loss, and mark-to-market information.
- Learn how live market volatility impacts trading positions and how teams monitor risk measures such as exposure, stress testing, liquidity, and trading limits.
- Work with data from systems and tools such as Excel, Power BI, and other trading/risk platforms to identify trends, exceptions, or areas for improvement.
- Join conversations with finance and risk colleagues, trading benches, and other supporting teams to understand how commercial decisions are supported and challenged.
- Own a summer project that solves a real business problem, then share your work through a final presentation.

As a bp intern, you can expect:

- We pay interns and co-ops a set non-negotiable monthly rate based on your degree major, degree level, and year of graduation. For this role, monthly salaries range from $5,313 to $5,625.
Minimum requirements:
- Working toward a bachelor's degree
- Graduating between December 2027 and May 2028
- Current Cumulative GPA Minimum 3.0
- Eligible to work in the U.S. with no restrictions; bp will not support U.S. immigration sponsorship for full-time or long-term employment
- Must be available to start 12-week internship on May 17, 2027 (will be required to pass all background and medical checks at least one week prior to start date)
- Willing to relocate to Chicago, IL for the duration of the internship
Preferred qualifications:
- Interest in commodity markets, trading, finance, analytics, or risk management
- Familiarity with Excel and PowerPoint; exposure to Power BI or other data tools is a plus
- Strong communication skills
- Curiosity and willingness to ask questions, learn quickly, and solve problems
- Basic understanding of financial controls and risk management
