Under general supervision, independently performs a full range of investigative duties to enforce and ensure compliance with the City’s ordinances governing businesses, consumer protection, and related duties. Conducts certification inspections on measuring devices, heavy capacity scales, and gas pumps.
Essential Duties- Conduct investigations and inspections to ensure compliance with consumer protection, public vehicles, truck weight limits, and business requirements; respond to consumer complaints of deceptive practices.
- Conduct certification inspections on measuring devices and heavy capacity scales, operating a small crane to lift 1,000‑lb. weights.
- Inspect gas stations to ensure they are operating with current licenses and comply with Filling Stations Rules and Regulations.
- Conduct undercover investigations.
- Confiscate illegal merchandise and issue citations, closure orders, notices, suspensions, and other enforcement actions.
- Prepare extensive written reports detailing findings of investigations.
- Inform owners, managers, or employees on regulatory standards, violations, and regulations.
- Testify at court proceedings regarding violations.
- Conduct research, examine records, interpret ordinances, rules and state statutes to determine compliance.
- Conduct truck weight investigations to determine compliance with weight limit regulations.
- Assist in training newly hired investigators, as required.
- Maneuver scales (approximately 50 pounds) under vehicles to calculate weight.

Wednesday–Sunday - Hours:
6:00 pm – 2:00 am or 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm
- Associate’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, or related field plus one year work experience in investigations, research, report writing, code enforcement, or regulatory compliance.
- Alternatively, 60 college credits in the same fields plus one year work experience.
- Alternatively, three years work experience in investigations, research, report writing, code enforcement, or regulatory compliance.
- Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
- Permanent use of a properly insured automobile that includes a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.
This position requires applicants to complete an interview, including a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test. Selected candidates will be ordered by seniority per the collective bargaining agreement.
